Canyon Resident Gets a Sign From the Town of Moraga

A Canyon resident saw trouble ahead on the slim, windy roads of his woodsy community and he asked Moraga officials to do something about it. Guess what happened?

One night in December of last year,  resident Bruce Nikolai was motoring down Pinehurst in his woodsy, redwood-canopied community when to his amazement a school bus — far too big for the snaky country road — passed him and disappeared into the night.

"As you may know, Pinehurst is not a good route for large vehicles and there has never been a warning sign," Nikolai said. "After that incident I contacted the town of Moraga requesting a warning sign be put up on Canyon Road and recently such a sign has been installed."

Nikolai wanted to report the "positive outcome" after more than 20 years of seeing big rigs and other vehicles stuck on Pinehurst after making their way into Canyon.

"My impression is that the drivers see the mileage/direction signs to Oakland at the intersection of Moraga Way and Moraga Road and think it is a viable shortcut to Oakland," he said.

initially was considering a “narrow, curvy road next few miles” sign at the Valle Vista staging area since buses and larger vehicles can access the road from Moraga up to that point, but opted for this version after study.

Nikolai was pleased and gratified by the town's swift action.

"It is reassuring to see this get done as it certainly will increase safety as large trucks/vehicles will now know they cannot proceed on Pinehurst," he wrote Monday.
