Caltrans Sets Tentative Date for Caldecott Fourth Bore Ribbon Cutting

Caltrans has set Nov. 16 as a tentative opening date for the new fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, according to a spokesperson for the agency.

Ivy Morrison said the tunnel was finished on time and on budget with the help of partners, including the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, which shouldered more than a quarter of the $417 million cost with money raised from Measure J. Nearly half of the money came from stimulus funds provided by the federal government during the Great Recession. 

The opening date is tentative because testing of the fourth bore’s fire safety systems may take longer than expected, Morrison said. She added that while getting the new tunnel ready for traffic will require the temporary closure of existing bores, there will be one bore open in each direction at all times.
