Who's Doing the Shooting? No One, Folks, It's Fireworks

The Patch Radar lit up Saturday with reports of shots fired in town. Only what sounded like gunfire, wasn't.

There are still a few questions to be asked but the mystery of some near-midnight gunfire in the downtown area of Lafayette appears to have been solved. According to Police Chief Mike Hubbard, all that shooting folks heard Saturday wasn't shooting at all.

"Fireworks," the chief reported Monday. "Fireworks at the church behind Chow..."

Our "switchboards" lit up as, apparently, so did the chief's on Saturday with at least one resident asking Hubbard what was going on by email. Our comment stream is open and you can see several people checking in starting at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, with reports of "helicopters" hovering over the area afterward.

Unknown what the pyrotechnics were about, Hubbard said (Chinese New Year?) but the lateness of the hour is cause for concern and would be looked into, he said.
