San Ramon police say he and three other men were trying to rob the store when "a man in the store," shot him. The others reportedly fled in a 1990s white sedan and are still being sought by police. This, and other recent incidents, has heightened concerns about crime at suburban "strip mall" locations -- with criminal gangs targeting similar businesses they feel are "soft" and thinly protected with few security measures.

The business singled out for robbery Wednesday is a jewelry and coin store that specializes in vintage and modern varieties. The company is family-run and has been in business for more than 15 years.
