Two Crashes, One Busy Moraga Intersection

Halloween morning saw two collisions and one DUI arrest at Moraga Way and School Street.

On Halloween morning, Moraga police investigated a couple of consecutive accidents at the intersection of Moraga Way and School Street, not far from Safeway.

There was no indication in the police reports if the second accident, which involved a rear-end collision, had something to do with rubber-necking at the scene of the first accident.

In the first accident, at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday, officers observed a silver vehicle swerving on Moraga Way after receiving reports of such a vehicle speeding from Orinda to Moraga on Moraga Way. The silver vehicle apparently struck a parked vehicle at the corner of School Street in a non-injury accident. The driver of the silver vehicle was arrested on suspicion of DUI, Moraga police reported.

The next accident involved a rear-end collision and three vehicles at 10:32 a.m. at Moraga Way and School Street, police reported. The damage was minor. One vehicle was towed and one driver was placed under arrest, although the police report did not state the charge.

A clot of people, some in gaudy Halloween costumes, gathered at the busy accident intersection to observe, a Patch reader reported.

Welcome to Moraga sez Bob Priebe....if you fit a profile (broken license plate light, windshield wiper inoperable, broken radio antenna, too many stickers on the back windshield, a spare twinkee tire, driving at 2:00 A.M.) then expect a DUI from the Queen of the DUI quota....Krista Koppinger, badge 192

The DUI "quota" is 100% of the over .08%. DUI is not a broken license plate light. DUI is an invitation to manslaughter

Thank you Office Krista Koppinger for protecting the community against DUI drivers. (Andrew, your leap from "fit a profile" to that driver being ticketed "under the law" for having blood alcohol over .08% incorporates legal and objective ground---so as you presented it...I'm OK with Krista's ticketing behavior.)

WOW. This article is riddled with inaccuracies & sarcastic. There was ONE accident. A driver under the influence barreled into another car at Moraga Way and School Street. How this driver did not kill anyone I will never know. She was followed by a driver from Hwy 24 all the way down Moraga Way because she was seen swerving in and out of lanes and nearly hit two cars before rear ending the individual stopped at a red light. After pulling her car over (and in the process hitting another parked car) she looked disheveled and disoriented and could not respond to anyone asking her questions. Eventually she exited her car and could barely stand. It was clear to everyone she was not in any condition to drive. This happened right in front of a preschool where a toddler Halloween parade had just finished. Had she come barreling down Moraga Way 10 minutes earlier, children could have been badly hurt or even killed. So those "gaudy" costumes you speak of? Nice, Patch... preschool Halloween gathering. And as for the "rubber-necking"? Concerned citizens were standing by waiting for the Moraga police to show up WHO ARRIVED 15 MINS AFTER BEING CALLED. Anyone who lives in town knows there's not a lot else going on..... if you get a call that there's a dangerous driver involved in an accident, wouldn't you want to arrive a touch earlier? Patch, lost a lot of respect for your work with this article. Who were your sources for this? Many upset community members.
