Orinda Carjacking Ends With Crash On Highway 24 In Lafayette

CHP investigators said a stolen car crashed east of Oak Hill Road early Thursday after it was reported stolen by force in Orinda.

Updated: 1:48 p.m. Thursday

Orinda police responded to a report of a carjacking in the unit, or first, block of Moraga Way Thursday, a female victim telling officers that a man had knocked her down and taken her 2011 Honda Civic at around 12:40 a.m.

Roughly ten minutes later the County Sheriff's dispatch was advised that the California Highway Patrol was handling a vehicle accident on eastbound Highway 24 near Oak Hill Road, according to sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee.

Officers found a Honda Civic on fire and were told that someone was seen running from the area, Lee said. A check confirmed that the burning car was the one taken in Orinda and a unnamed Lafayette police officer began a search for that individual.

Mark Dilley, 27, of Davis, CA was later located by police at a shopping center on Mt. Diablo Road and arrested without incident. Dilley was taken to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered during his crash and the carjacking victim, whose age was not given, was also treated as a "precautionary" measure, according to Lee.

Dilley was later transported to county jail, where he was booked on five charges: carjacking, vehicle theft, drug possession, having a suspended license and probation violation. His bail is set at $125,000.
