Sheriff's Dog Gets The Burglary Collar

K9 locates alleged bad guys in vacant house's crawl space. Lafayette police chief credits alert neighbors for thwarting four-person burglary team on Jennie Court.

The credit for bringing down a burglary team goes to a sheriff's office tracking dog and an alert neighbor for calling in with suspicions, reported Lafayette Police Chief Eric Christensen.

One suspect suffered a bite from the sheriff's dog. All four suspects were located and arrested, Christensen wrote in an email.

From Christensen's email:

At 1102 hrs, Sheriff's Dispatch received a call from an alert neighbor that two male subjects had arrived in a pick-up truck and entered the side gate of a vacant home in the 600 block of Jennie Court. The neighbor continued that a second vehicle (occupied by two females) was also involved and was driving up and down the street,

Lafayette Units responded to the scene and detained the two females. Entry was found to have been made to the rear of the residence, but the two males were not found in the residence or surrounding grounds.  Orinda, Moraga, East Bay Parks and CHP Units were requested to assist in establishing a perimeter and a Sheriff's Canine (1K98) was requested to perform the track of the suspects.

Shortly after starting the track, the canine team located the two male subjects hiding in the crawl space beneath the residence. One of the suspects did suffer a bite from the canine. All four suspects have been located and are under arrest.

This incident again shows the value of neighbors who know each other and are concerned enough to call us when they think something is out of the ordinary. Kudos to the alert neighbor who called.
