Robber Steals Gold Necklace at Gunpoint

A man armed with a black handgun robbed an Alameda woman during the early afternoon at South Shore Center on Sunday.

A robber stole a gold necklace from a 51-year-old Alameda woman at gunpoint Sunday, Sept. 23, at South Shore Center, an Alameda Police Department spokesman said.

Lt. Ted Horlbeck said the robbery took place shortly before 1 p.m. on a walkway near the Starbucks coffee shop at South Shore. The victim was not injured, he said. The thief left on foot, in the direction of the U.S. Post Office, he said.

The robber was described as a black male 20 to 25 years old, 5'10" to 6'2" tall, weighing about 180 pounds and wearing a dark hoodie and dark pants.

Horlbeck said the description does not match that of a man suspected of three other robberies in late August and early September, including one of a teenage girl near South Shore Center.

Regarding the texting security guard, why doesn't someone who observes her behavior report it to mall management? Not that I would want someone to lose their job in this economy, but a blunt talking to from her management might be all it takes to get her to change her behavior and be an observant, effective deterrent.

We need more police presence all over the island. Go ahead and find out how many cruisers are sent out each day. Call the police and ask them. You will be appalled. I walk all over the island and seeing an officer is a rarity. Maybe the chief should take less salary, along with the fire chief, and city attorney and hire more police! Alameda is at an all-time low.

They can't even enforce our new smoking laws, people smoking all over South Shore. Maybe they could enforce the smoking laws, fine, and hire some more police. Just kidding, but they do need to stop this, pronto. They need to get on the ball including loitering on the street, smoking pot on the street, drinking on the street, speeding, and arrest people that run down folks in crosswalks. The police seem to not enforce any laws anymore or they are overwhelmed? What are the citizens going to have to take over like they did the animal shelter? We once had a great couple of police chiefs here and a great force. I don't know who the new police chief is, but not impressed. The poor guys left are likely overwhelmed, jaded, and overworked. Alameda needs to speak up and not accept this.

They also need to start profiling. They are trained to find suspicious people.
