Orinda Grass Fire Briefly Closes Highway 24 Off Ramp

The eastbound on-ramp to Highway 24 was shut down briefly Wednesday due to a smoky grass fire in the center median.

Fire crews battled a smoky grass fire on the Orinda off ramp from eastbound Highway 24 this afternoon, briefly closing the off ramp to traffic while the fire was at its smokiest. The blaze, reported at 1:20 p.m. and of undetermined origin, appears to have started in the landscaping alongside the freeway.

Sixty firefighters from three agencies had the fire under control in about 30 minutes. The 2.5-acre fire was contained to the landscape island between the off ramp and the freeway. No structures were threatened and there were no injuries reported.

Personnel from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District, Contra Costa County Fire District, East Bay Regional Park District and Cal Fire responded and assisted in controlling the fire.
