Orinda Hit and Run Stuns Driver, First Responders

You're motoring along, minding your own business and then WHAM - your car is falling apart around you.

An early morning crash Sunday on eastbound Highway 24 and the St. Stevens on-ramp left a woman motorist thankful for her life and Moraga-Orinda Fire District firefighters amazed.

Investigators say the woman was within her lane when she was struck at great speed from behind by another - apparently innattentive motorist - who sent her car spinning down the highway.

"She remembers spinning on the freeway several times as the contents of her trunk spilled out for over 500 feet," Battalion Chief Darrell Lee said. "The other driver fled the scene with police from Lafayette, Orinda and Moraga searching for a suspect."

As you can see from the photos the unfortunate driver's trunk was ripped open by the impact, which also caused her airbags to deploy. The hit-and-run driver was last seen in the area of Acalanes Road and Mt.Diablo Blvd. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
