Update: Police Say Lafayette Man Shot By Officers Brandished A Knife

A suspect was shot Tuesday morning on Woodview Drive and taken to hospital, according to the sheriff's department. No officers were injured.

Update, 4:42 p.m. Tuesday. The man shot in the incident was reported out of surgery and remaining at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee reported.

A 28-year-old man shot Tuesday morning by a Lafayette police officer brandished a knife at the entrance of a house on Woodview Drive, police said.

Lafayette Police Chief Eric Christensen said the man, who hasn't been identified yet, lived at the home at 3425 Woodview Dr. at the cul-de-sac of Woodview Drive just over the hilltop section. Woodview Drive is a turn off St. Mary's Road in Lafayette.

The man was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. The suspect's condition is unknown, but Christensen said he is expected to survive. No officers were injured.

Christensen said two officers responded to a 9-1-1 hangup call (someone called 9-1-1, then hung up) about 7 a.m. and noticed a series of broken windows in front of the house. "As they approached the residence, the subject came out of a house with a knife," Christensen said.

One officer fired shots. The chief did not say how many shots were fired.

Christensen said he believed there were three people in the house at the time in addition to the subject.

Police were canvassing the neighborhood later Tuesday morning.

Christensen, who has been chief for a year, said he was unaware of any other officer-involved shootings by Lafayette officers.

According to online records, the residents of the home may include William Schock, 61; Kerry Schock, 58; Rylie Schock, 27; Tyler Schock, 24; Michael Schock, no age available. This information comes from ZabaSearch.com, which shows addresses for individuals but may not be current.

William Schock appears to be chief building and zoning official for the city of San Leandro.

Neighbor Joe Farnan said he heard at least two shots and then saw police cars in the driveway of the shingle house with a plywood addition. "A nice suburban family" lives there, Farnan said — "a friendly family."

Farnan said he thought the parents were visiting Mexico. That left some adult children there, including one boyfriend, he said.

"Someone was taken away in an ambulance," Farnan said.

Cathy Borman of Palmdale was visiting the neighborhood, helping to look after her grandson. She was playing with her grandson when she heard two or three gunshots, "and then all the police came."

Police are investigating per Contra Costa County's officer-involved shooting protocol. Agencies investigating include the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, Sheriff's Office and the Lafayette Police Department, said sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee.
