A 70-year-old man died from injuries he suffered when his motorcycle veered off state Highway 24 in Orinda on Tuesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Fred Carl Sprinkle, 70, of Oakley, was riding his 2002 Harley Davidson west on Highway 24 at about 1:30 p.m. when he drifted onto the right shoulder and down an embankment, CHP Contra Costa area spokesman John Fransen said.

Both Sprinkle and his passenger, a 62-year-old woman from Knightsen, were ejected from the bike, Fransen said.

They were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for treatment of their injuries.

The woman suffered moderate injuries while Sprinkle suffered major injuries and later died, Fransen said.

So far drugs and alcohol are not a suspected factor in the crash but that won't be confirmed until investigators receive a report from the coroner, Fransen said.

Anyone with information about the crash has been asked to contact the CHP at (925) 646-4980.
