Moraga Police Track Auto Theft Suspect

A highly visible search for an auto theft suspect failed to turn up the culprit but did lead to the recovery of a stolen car.

Moraga police conducted a routine check on a black GMC Envoy driving north on Moraga Road at Ascot Drive early Friday morning, and quickly learned that the car had been reported stolen in Alameda.

Officers tailed the Envoy to Moraga Road and Saint Mary's Road in Lafayette and attempted to stop the vehicle and its operator at 12:21 a.m. Friday, police said, giving chase when the driver abruptly exited the vehicle and began to run.

Police were unable to find the driver despite a cordon they put up around the area. The car's owner, who reported the car stolen in Alameda on July 23, was alerted.
