Moraga Police Log: Safeway Burglary, Elderly Woman Scammed, DUI Arrests

Some of the incidents that kept Moraga police busy this past week

Here some of the items from the Moraga Police Department logs from Nov. 14 to Nov. 18.

Thursday, Nov. 14

Older woman scammed: Police were informed that an elderly woman had sent nearly $15,000 from Nov. 9 to Nov. 14 to a man in the Dominican Republic who claimed to be her grandson and needed money to pay for injuries he had sustained there. The funds were sent by Money Grams. The phone number the man called on was a blocked number. The case is under investigation.

Hit-run accident: Officers were notified at 7:15 a.m. about a hit-and-run accident that had happened the day before. A woman said her college age daughter was turning eastbound onto Rheem Boulevard from northbound Center Street when her 1999 Lexus RX was struck by a white or tan pick-up truck driven by a man. The other driver drove off. Damage to the Lexus was minor.

Friday, Nov. 15

DUI arrest: A 61-year-old Moraga man was arrested at 8:25 p.m. for driving under the influence after an officer noticed the man's 2011 Chrysler drift over the solid double yellow lines on eastbound Moraga Way near Moraga Valley Lane.

Saturday, Nov. 16

Loud party: Officers went to a residence on Miramonte Drive at 12:13 a.m. for a report of a loud party. They found 100 college age students partying inside and outside the home. The house's occupant agreed to disband the celebration.

DUI arrest: A 53-year-old Moraga man was arrested at 2:03 a.m. after an officer noticed the man's red Ford pick-up truck swerving on Canyon Road near Camino Pablo as well as the right and left turn signals flicking on for no apparent reason. The driver was given a field test, which showed a blood alcohol level of .17 percent.

Bachelorette party: Officers went to a resident in the 1900 block of Ascot Drive for a report of a loud party. They found a woman who was hosting a bachelorette party. She agreed to keep the noise down and end the party soon.

Sunday, Nov. 17

Safeway burglary: Police were notified at 1:13 a.m. of a burglary at the Safeway store on Moraga Way. Witnesses told officer that a woman acted as a lookout while a man pried open a cash register at the front of the store and took money from it. The two suspects left the store and police were unable to locate them.

Monday, Nov. 18

What's that noise?: Officers went to an apartment complex in the 1900 block of Ascot Drive at 9:27 p.m. for a report of a loud alarm. Officers investigated and discovered a discarded alarm clock in a dumpster was the source of the noise.
