Moraga Police Log: Black Ice Accidents, Musical DUI Arrest, $15,000 Jewelry Theft

Some of the incidents that kept Moraga police officers busy this past week

Some of the items on the Moraga Police Department logs from Dec. 12 to Dec. 16.

Thursday, Dec. 12

Packages stolen: Police were informed at 10:40 a.m. that three UPS packages had been stolen from the porch of a home on Corte La Rado. The boxes had been emptied and tossed in a trash bin at the front of the residence.

Two-car collision: Officers responded to Moraga Road and Devin Drive at 11:34 a.m. for a report of a vehicular accident. At the intersection, a Ford Fusion had collided with a Toyota Avalon. The Fusion had rolled over onto its roof. The driver of the Avalon wasn't injured. The Fusion driver had an abrasion on his head and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Phony attorney: Police were notified at 4:46 p.m. by a man who said he had sent money via Western Union to someone who had called him, saying he was representing a relative of the victim who had been injured in a car accident. After sending the money, the victim determined no one in his family had been in an accident.

Deer hit: A motorist called police at 11:08 p.m. to report she had accidentally struck and killed a large deer while traveling on Moraga Road near St. Mary's Road. The front bumper of the woman's 2008 Ford Escape was damaged in the collision.

Friday, Dec. 13

Truck vs. bus: Officers were sent to the intersection of St. Mary's Road and Stafford Drive at 7:24 a.m. for an accident involving a truck and a Central Contra Costa Transit Authority bus. Police determined black ice on the road was the cause of the accident. More information on the accident can be found on this Patch story.

Another black ice accident: Officers were dispatched at 8:03 a.m. to a stretch of Canyon Road near Camino Pablo for reports of an overturned vehicle in a ravine. Police determined the uninjured 17-year-old driver of a 1993 Mercedes Benz had lost control of the vehicle after skidding on some black ice on the road. The driver's parents were notified and the car was towed.

Jewelry theft: A woman called police at 11:12 a.m. to report that $15,550 worth of jewelry had been stolen from her home on Devin Drive. The jewelry was last seen in mid-July. It was recently discovered that the items were missing.

Counterfeit bills: Officers were notified at 8:19 p.m. that a man and female customer at the HomeGoods store on Moraga Road had purchased bedding supplies using two counterfeit $100 bills.

Musical DUI: A 46-year-old Moraga man was arrested for driving under the influence at 8:33 p.m. after officers noticed his 2013 white Chevrolet Tahoe speeding and failing to stop at a stop sign on Augusta Drive in the Moraga Country Club. A breath test at the police station revealed a blood-alcohol level of .15 percent. Police said the man admitted to drinking red wine at a party in San Francisco. He also told officers he was listening to "More Than A Feeling" by Boston and was having fun flying over speed bumps in his rented vehicle.

Saturday, Dec. 14

Buzzing padlock: Officers went to the area of Moraga Road and Rheem Boulevard at 9:53 a.m. after a bicyclist reported hearing a buzzing sound covering from a device wrapped in aluminum foil on the side of the road. Officers determined the device was a digital padlock.

Stolen vehicle: A man called police at 11:59 a.m. to report his white 2010 Acura TSX four-door sedan had been stolen overnight from his driveway on Harold Drive.

Sunday, Dec. 15

Another stolen vehicle: A man called police at 5 p.m. to report his 1992 Chevrolet S10 truck had been stolen from in front of his home on Camino Peral. About $1,500 worth of tools were inside the cab of the vehicle.

Monday, Dec 16

Car accident: Officers went to the intersection of Canyon Road and Camino Pablo at 11:25 a.m. to investigate an accident. They determined a recumbent bicyclist who was southbound on Canyon Road had made a 90-degree turn into the crosswalk. The driver of a southbound car swerved to avoid the bicyclist and hit a sign in the road median. No one was hurt. Damage to the sign is estimated at $500.

Arrest in Jack-in-the-Box: A 22-year-old Moraga man was arrested at 8:22 p.m. for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of hypodermic syringes and resisting arrest. Officers say the man ran into the Jack-in-the-Box on Moraga Way after they approached him. They say the suspect dropped drug paraphernalia inside the restaurant and they struggled with officers while they were arresting him.
