Moraga PD: Where Free Speech Meets 'Shop Moraga First' Movement

Also, a diversified array of drug paraphernalia in a parked car, and other criminal and constitutionally protected behavior in the Moraga police blotter from March 29 to April 1.

March 29
Truck rifled. Reported at 11:20 p.m., suspects gained entry to a Chevy Silverado truck parked on Donald Drive. They stole a baseball cap, windbreaker, music CDs, and a portable radio. The estimated loss was over $275. The victim believes suspects gained entry with a set of keys stolen from inside the truck eight months ago.

March 31
Drug cache. At 2:46 p.m. on Camino Ricardo at Whiting Court, an officer approached a parked vehicle in which two 22-year-old men were flicking cigarette ashes out the window. The officer reported smelling an alcoholic beverage and searched the car, finding:

  • several methamphetamine pipes.
  • several pieces of foil suspected for use in smoking Oxycodone.
  • one Clonazepan tablet.
  • three hypodermic needles.

The passenger was charged with a misdemeanor: possession of hypodermic needles. With other items, police reported, "There was no conclusive evidence who had possession of the additional items listed and were confiscated."

April 1
Protest or parody? At 12:35 p.m., police responded to the Rheem Shopping Center post office, with a complaint about protesters with signs, passing out political material. They were "not setting a good example for the kids who reside in Moraga," the complainant said. Officers contacted the subjects, "who appeared to be members of the LaRouche movement engaged in their Constitutional protected right of Freedom of Speech, but could also have been engaged in an 'April Fools' prank as well. No law violations were observed. Officers asked the subjects to shop in the area to contribute to the local economy while in Moraga."

Up on the roof. At 10:41 p.m., officers received a report of three people on the roof of Los Perales Elementary School on Wakefield Drive. They were gone upon police arrival.
