Moraga PD: Watch Out For Medicare Scam

Don't tell the caller your bank account information. Also, other criminal behavior is reflected in the Moraga police blotter from March 20 to March 22.

March 20
Watch for Medicare scam. Moraga police officers investigated a Corliss Drive resident who reported receiving a scam call in which the caller verified the resident's name and asked if she was on Medicare. The caller stated that Medicare would send her a new card and requested her bank account number. The resident gave the bank number, then thought better of it and called Medicare, who confirmed that they would never ask for that information over the phone.

March 21
Pot, speed. At 1:00 a.m. on Moraga Road, an officer pulled over a gold Toyota for speeding. The officer located 14 grams of unburnt marijuana in the car and confiscated it. The 19-year-old driver was ticketed for unsafe speed and possession of marijuana inside a vehicle.

Further investigation. After an apparent drug transaction at 12:06 p.m. at Campolindo High, school staff chased an 18-year-old student, who ran off campus. When he returned, police officers were there to confront him. He claimed to have lost his car keys. A narcotics-trained dog was brought in and located the student's car with 34.42 grams of marijuana in the trunk, police reported. The pot was booked into evidence and sent to the Sheriff's Office Crime Lab.

Flipped off. At 4 p.m. at Canyon Road and Sanders Drive, a resident said he was crossing the street in the crosswalk. He was nearly struck by a red Volkswagen Beetle, whose driver slammed on the brakes and then continued on while flipping off the pedestrian, the resident reported. The two later exchanged words in the parking lot of Orchard Supply before the driver drove off. Police are investigating.

March 22
Two drivers licenses. At 10:19 a.m., officers pulled over a 2005 Ford Explorer on Chalda Drive at Rheem Boulevard because the driver was observed chatting on the cell phone. During the stop, the officer observed that the 20-year-old driver had two California driver's licenses. After investigating, the man was charged with possession of a fake drivers license, a cell phone violation and no proof of insurance.
