Light-fingered Thief Makes Rounds of Lamorinda Open Homes

Selling your home? You may want to lock up your valuables before opening your doors to prospective buyers.

Apparently Lafayette and Orinda police are looking for a man who helps himself to more than your realtor's cookies when touring local open homes.

Lafayette City Manager Steven Falk said the local gendarmerie started getting complaints of thefts from homes opened for inspection by prospective buyers and confirmed those reports in an unusual fashion.

"Interestingly, a laptop computer video camera was left on during the Orinda open-house and – inadvertently and fortunately – captured footage of the suspect committing the theft," Falk wrote in his Friday Summary.

Turns out the "buyer" made off with $7,700 in jewelry from a Lafayette home and was recognized at other open homes that same day.

He is described as a white male adult in his late thirties or early forties, average build and about 6 feet tall. He has short dark hair with grey side burns. Anyone with information on the man is asked to contact Lafayette PD Detective Parrilla at 299-3287.
