Lafayette Police Blotter: Granny Scams, Rip N' Runs and Wobbly Driving

Here are the latest log entries from the men and women of the Lafayette police department. Hear of anything else we should be looking into? Let us know.

Driving Under the Influence     

On May 3o at 2:35 p.m., Lafayette Police stopped a Nissan Altima heading southbound on highway 680 south off of Main Street after they noticed the car was driving erratically and was unable to maintain its lane. Officers discovered the driver, a 27 year-old Walnut Creek man, had an outstanding warrant and placed him under arrest.

He was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility and was booked.

Stolen Vehicle

On May 15 at 6:25 p.m., a police officer from Grass Valley called Lafayette Police to report finding items belonging to a Lafayette man inside the trunk of a stolen car that had just been recovered. According to police reports, the car was taken on May 9 at Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek.

Inside the car, police found the keys and personal property belonging to the Lafayette man along with an orange traffic vest with the name “Borque” written on the tag. Police checked the name in the system and found no matches.

On May 24 at 6 a.m., a 29 year-old Lafayette woman came into the Lafayette Police Station to report a stolen vehicle. She told officers a 31 year-old Pittsburg man stole her car after he entered her apartment while she was sleeping. According to police reports, the woman awoke to find the man standing over her while she was in bed and later punched her in the face before fleeing in her car. She also told police she noticed her cell phone along with $1,000 in cash was also missing from her desk drawer. The woman went into the Lafayette Police Station and signed the stolen car report.

Fraud

A 62 year-old man came into the Lafayette Police Station on May 20 to report credit card fraud. He told officers he received a call from Union Bank and was told someone appeared to be using his card in Georgia, spending $105.90. He said he was still in possession of the MasterCard and did not know how the suspect got his credit card number.

The bank issued him a new credit card with a new account number and opened a claim for fraudulent charges.

On May 24 at 1:51 p.m., an 84 year-old woman in the 3300 block of Las Huertas Road called Lafayette Police reporting a fraud. The woman told police she sent three checks totaling $63,625 to an unknown person after being told she won a lottery.

Suspicious Circumstances

While Lafayette Police responded to a report of an audible alarm going off in the 3900 block of Canyon Road, they were also made aware of trespassing in the same area. A 53 year-old woman and a 66 year-old man told officers, they saw a light skinned black male wearing a dark blue hoodie with white writing on the front, dark pants and short hair, trespassing. Officers from Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda police canvassed the area with the assistance of the Sheriff’s K9 and Starr2 helicopter but found no suspects.

A second call of a trespassing in the 4100 block of Canyon Road around the same time with similar description of the suspect but a further extensive search found nothing unusual.

Property Lost or Missing

Lafayette Police responded to a report of a missing wallet and contacted the victim by phone on May 29 at 7 p.m. The 53 year-old woman told officers she had used her credit card at Peet’s Coffee in Lafayette and when she later tried to use her credit card at a different location, she realized her wallet was missing. The woman said she contacted Peet’s Coffee and they told her no one had turned in a wallet. She told officers she may have dropped her wallet in the parking lot near Whole Foods and had looked everywhere nearby.

According to police reports, the missing wallet is a black wallet which contained her driver’s license, credit cards and $2,000 in Nordstrom gift cards.

Commercial Burglary

At 6:45 p.m. on May 25, Lafayette Police responded to a report of a commercial burglary in the 3500 block of Mount Diablo Boulevard. The 23 year-old AT&T Mobile employee told officers someone had entered the store, took two display phones, ran out of the store and left in a Ford F-150 truck. A 64 year-old Lafayette man witnessed the incident and followed the truck until it went into the Caldecott Tunnel.
