How to Stay Safe This Halloween

The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff offers tips for trick-or-treating safely this Halloween.

Here's a note from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office about keeping your family safe this Halloween:

The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff would like to offer children and adults some safety tips for those taking part in trick-or-treat or other Halloween activities. The Office of the Sheriff wants everyone to have a fun, but safe Halloween.

  • Wear a costume that makes it easier for you to walk, see and be seen. Costumes should be light, bright and clearly visible to motorists.
  • Purchase costumes, masks, beards and wigs that are made with flame-resistant fabrics and look for the “flame-resistant'' label.
  • Use reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights on the costumes. Bags or sacks children use for their treats should be decorated with reflective tape.
  • Trick-or-treat when there is still light outside. Stop only at homes where the outside light is on.
  • Plan your trick-or-treat route ahead of time. Pick well-lit streets.
  • Cross only at corners; obey traffic signals. Never cross between parked cars or mid-block.
  • Do not go inside anyone’s home unless you are with a trusted adult.
  • Carry a flashlight so you can see and be seen.
  • If there are no sidewalks, always walk facing traffic.
  • Children should always trick-or-treat under the supervision of adults. Trick-or-treat in a group.
  • Do not let children accept homemade or unwrapped treats.
  • Children should not eat any treats before an adult has examined them for evidence of tampering.
  • Report any suspicious activity to your local police department.

Parents and guardians can also see if any registered sex offenders reside in the areas where trick or treating is planned. Simply log on to www.meganslaw.ca.gov. The Sheriff’s Office currently monitors over 300 registered sex offenders in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Also on Halloween, several law enforcement agencies in Contra Costa will be conducting anti-DUI saturation patrols where officers will be cracking down on impaired drivers.

L Meza: You baffled and sadden me! After 6+ weeks of me begging that you answer some questions,You chastise me! That if I have an Issue with you "Talk to me at Safeway where I said Hello!// Hello back I am sure again/however I have zero idea what who you are in person! Also This is a question asked many many times/IN A PUBLIC FORUM! Fully 1/2 PLUS is about TAXPAYER Monies! They have a right to .....Hear Your Answers/! I am not an official, that's why a "Public Question"... Needs a Public answer! Not in the middle of a store, Why are you hiding from the TAXPAYER's? Telling me "ASK ME THERE" odd! Then You are so "WITTY" ...notttt adding "Try some DECAF"! You Try just answering the Question in Public! You should know of what you speak, // sigh I fear (Ignorance is your BEST DEFENSE) isn't it!

Now Meza... as to your statement about "decaf" and no it wasn't a "figure of speech it was meant to insult! What you did was just open "Old but Painful wounds" In my families life! At age 11 my Mother had a bad STROKE/ It was early morning I was there, Holding my MOM as she SHOOK..//Well all the terrible signs/Telling her "You'll be ok MOM... as I PRAYED THAT IT BE SO! My Dad was on the phone getting Medical Treatment to be sent! Thank GOD she recovered completely//However one of the don't do things....Was Drink Coffee//!! You don't care but I did so I have never had any coffee in my life, as a support to my MOM! Also I sure don't mind if other's enjoy their Coffee for some there are ,studies now that say it can help some people! However Meza all you did was "Bring up sad Memories"! Yes all Families have Tragedies, sadly! Yet You implied something that was//well what you are so GOOD AT....Lying! Leave My Family Memories good or bad alone, know of what YOU SPEAK! Also Please answer the same Questions Posted in many places/ Don't LIE and say I can't find them.....or /just ask I shall repost! You are not forgiven for bringing up "Sadness"..... your Lies they like you are so pedestrian! Donald E. Barkley

Barkley, if you want to be taken seriously, I suggest you find someone who can teach you how to use punctuation.

I am shutting down this thread. Halloween is over. Mr. Barkley, I understand your frustration over not having your question answered. But apparently there is no answer forthcoming. So I'm asking you now to drop it. Thank you.
