Fore! Rented Mazda Plays Through at Moraga Country Club

An Oakland resident gets into a spat with her boyfriend and leaves town in a huff -- only to have a water hazard swallow her car.

Bleary-eyed commuters swear to Patch that there was a car in the lake next to the 9th tee at the Wednesday morning and, after a few phone calls, we can confirm that there was.

"Started with a call of an argument on Sanders at 9:20 p.m. last night (Tuesday)," Chief Robert Priebe said Wednesday. "Turned out a 32-year-old Oakland resident got into an argument with her boyfriend and left in a hurry, thought she had made the turn onto Moraga Way but was actually still on Country Club Drive... and headed straight for the country club."

The unidentified Oakland resident may have had a shortcut in mind but it was lost on country club workers and patrons as she plowed "hill and dale" through the intersection at St. Andrews Drive, on into the club parking lot, through a pile of wood chips, and then into the lake -- submerging the car to the roof.

She exited the car through the passenger side window and swam to shore, walking to the Moraga Safeway and calling police. Officers took her into custody around 9:50 p.m., Priebe said, then to the hospital to get her wrist checked out.

From there she was released and then booked into the county jail for driving while under the influence.

The car, a 2012 Mazda, was a rental. Ouch.
