Update: 5:20 p.m. Monday, A PG&E crew worked on a pole damaged in the Sunday accident. One of two southbound lanes remained coned off at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
A single-vehicle, fatal accident Sunday afternoon in which a four-door Honda sheared a power pole may affect the morning commute on Pleasant Hill Road, Lafayette, near Springhill Elementary School and Acalanes High School.
The single vehicle struck a power pole, rolled over and caught fire at Springhill Road and Pleasant Hill roads at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
The sheriff's office and Lafayette police are investigating the incident. A coroner's spokesman identified the victim as Charles Silverman, 28, of Concord, the Contra Costa Times reported.
On Sunday evening and expected to continue through the night, street lights were out at the intersection and traffic was being diverted from southbound lanes of Pleasant Hill Road south of Springhill Road with a long detour over the hill and onto Geary Road. A PG&E truck was on the scene Sunday night.
On Sunday afternoon, PGE reported the crash knocked out power to 651 customers but power was restored to most by 6 p.m., the Times reported.
