Repairs Continue at Site of Fatal Lafayette Accident

Update: Concord man dies in Sunday afternoon rollover accident at Pleasant Hill and Springhill roads. Car shears pole, knocks out power and affects Pleasant Hill Road commute.

Update: 5:20 p.m. Monday, A PG&E crew worked on a pole damaged in the Sunday accident. One of two southbound lanes remained coned off at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

A single-vehicle, fatal accident Sunday afternoon in which a four-door Honda sheared a power pole may affect the morning commute on Pleasant Hill Road, Lafayette, near Springhill Elementary School and Acalanes High School.

The single vehicle struck a power pole, rolled over and caught fire at Springhill Road and Pleasant Hill roads at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The sheriff's office and Lafayette police are investigating the incident. A coroner's spokesman identified the victim as Charles Silverman, 28, of Concord, the Contra Costa Times reported.

On Sunday evening and expected to continue through the night, street lights were out at the intersection and traffic was being diverted from southbound lanes of Pleasant Hill Road south of Springhill Road with a long detour over the hill and onto Geary Road. A PG&E truck was on the scene Sunday night.

On Sunday afternoon, PGE reported the crash knocked out power to 651 customers but power was restored to most by 6 p.m., the Times reported.

Thanks to Patch reader Larry Zulch for sending in photos from the scene.

I saw this car pass me at about Withers and Pleasant Hill Rd..Only got a monentary glimpse when he screamed by but he looked terrified..think someone should have that Honda checked for malfunction like stuck accelerator ir something mechanical..don't think anyone is crazy enough to have speeded through all of the intersections on red lights..

I was wondering the same thing....I also heard that he flew through red lights, it's amazing that no one else was involved...It was Sunday at 1:30 and the game was on, so as I recall, it was really quiet on the streets. I live just above where the accident happened.

Lot of curves between Withers and where the crash happened. Makes me doubt it was mechanical but I suppose it's possible.

He was a loving man who touched many peoples hearts and was taken away from us too early in life. Reading what witness saw breaks my heart even more because that was not him! It's so out of the ordinary, like his Uncle said why wasn't he watching the game! Nothing adds up.... It's unfortunate that we will never know what truly happened on that tragic day...
Charles you will forever be in our hearts!

i don't understand why there is no more information on exactly what happened here and why. this is not a spot where accidents normally occur, nor is it one where excessive speeds are ever seen. this make no sense to me.

God Bless your family and I am sorry for your loss. I hope you find answers to this terrible tragedy.

I live fairly close to the accident site. I want to reiterate CLZ's comment. God Bless your family and I am so sorry for your loss. Reading Charles' obituary tells me he was a special person. You may never know what caused this tragedy but focus on positive memories.

On several occasions, I have seen 5-6 chickens pecking their way down their steep driveway on theRead More east side of Saint Mary's Road, very close to the Cattle Chute. I had not read this story earlier. On 6/3 or 6/4, I saw a black hen, alone, out in the road right at the point of the Moraga Commons. It was pecking the pavement on Moraga Road, as cars turning north from Saint Mary's Road were avoiding it. I hope the chicken crossed the road to the trail on the other side. Better yet, I hope it turned around and followed that trail right back to the Cattle Chute and home.
