Fatal Accident Under Investigation In Orinda; Motorists Returning From Wedding Party

One person was killed and another seriously injured in an accident near the Orinda Country Club Saturday.

A Southern California man was killed and his 27-year-old female passenger critically injured when their rental car left Camino Sobrante Road late Saturday night and crashed into a tree.

Detective Sergeant Neil Rafanan Monday identified the male victim as Evin Totoro, 25. The name of a woman in the car with Totoro at the time of the crash has not been released, Rafanan said, but she was last listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

"Everything that's been done so far has just been preliminary, officers are still writing up their reports," Rafanan said Monday, "but it is under investigation."

The accident, on a stretch of road near the 17th hole of the Orinda Country Club, was out of the norm for first responders called to the accident scene shortly before midnight Saturday.

"Something like this is really rare," Rafanan said.

Totoro and his passenger were reportedly attending a wedding party at the Orinda Country Club just prior to the crash, reported at roughly 11:55 p.m. Saturday.

"The airbags deployed but he (Totoro) had expired prior to our arrival," said Moraga-Orinda Fire District Division Chief Darrell Lee. "His female passenger was alive but unconscious."

The unidentified woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment, Lee said, arriving at 12:20 a.m Sunday. She was last reported in critical condition with an update expected sometime Monday morning. She was believed to have been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Lee said. Totoro was not believed to have been belted in and apparently died on impact.

Members of the wedding party were aware of the crash.

"I spoke with the groom Sunday," Lee said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time, Rafanan said.
