Early Morning Crash Kills Motorcyclist In Orinda

A fatal motorcycle accident briefly closed westbound Highway 24 Thursday morning.

California Highway Patrol investigators are looking into the cause of an early morning motorcycle crash that left an Oakland man dead in the roadway just before the Caldecott Tunnel early Thursday.

Westbound traffic was diverted for 40 minutes after 22-year-old David Schafer of Oakland was found dead roughly 30 feet away from his damaged Harley Davidson, according to the CHP. Investigators said motorists called to report that the rider had crashed and was struck by at least one other vehicle in the westbound lanes at about 1:38 a.m.

It was not immediately known if Schafer lost control of his bike or was struck by another vehicle and fell, officers said.
