Crews Put Out Lafayette House Fire; Resident Suffers Smoke Inhalation

Officials remind locals to check their power strips and extension cords following the Friday morning fire on Sweet Drive.

Fire crews extinguished a one-alarm fire at a Lafayette home this morning that left a resident suffering from smoke inhalation, a fire inspector said.

The blaze was reported just before 9 a.m. at a single-family home in the 3300 block of Sweet Drive, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Inspector George Laing.

A resident who was at home when the fire broke out was waiting outside when fire crews arrived and was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Laing said.
No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the home's front room and knocked it down in about five minutes.

Fire personnel believe the fire started due to "an electrical issue," Laing said.

The fire inspector said residents are strongly encouraged to "check to see they're using their electrical appliances correctly and not overloading power strips or extension cords."

A damage estimate for the fire was not available.
