Bottle Bombs Are No Joke

An unfortunate "prank" these days involves a plastic soda bottle and routine ingredients and a potentially dangerous explosion.

Earlier this month a bottle bomb was discovered on the lawn of a Lafayette home. Police were called and detonated it. But it could easily have been picked up by an unsuspecting adult or child, and cost them their sight, or a hand.

Bottle bombs are the latest trend in pranks. A lot of youngsters have a fascination for things that blow up, and bottle bombs are extremely easy to make, with ingredients that are found around most typical homes. We won't provide the recipe here, but it, like most everything these days, is a mere Google search away.

In addition to exploding the devices in wooded areas and other places where the risk of getting caught is minimal, it has become common for bottle bombs to be left on lawns, where they make get mistaken for garbage and picked up. A detonation is highly unlikely to be fatal, but at close range it could blind a person, or cause severe burns to the face, hands and arms.

If you see a plastic bottle on your property and you're not sure how it got there, be very careful to approach it carefully. It it appears to have liquid and foil inside, get away quickly and call police.

While I don't support criminal punishment for kids caught playing with or building these bombs, I do believe that any kids who leave one lying around & it causes bodily injury to someone should be charged as adults, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and serve their time in an adult prison. Armed with this information, kids and their parents can then make an informed decision with respect to playing with these bombs.

You do realize that prosecuting them would require the involvement of lawyers, though, right?
It would be nice if these kids would put as much effort into their chemistry class.

Just like we need snakes to keep down the rat population, sometimes we need lawyers to keep down the criminal element.

On several occasions, I have seen 5-6 chickens pecking their way down their steep driveway on theRead More east side of Saint Mary's Road, very close to the Cattle Chute. I had not read this story earlier. On 6/3 or 6/4, I saw a black hen, alone, out in the road right at the point of the Moraga Commons. It was pecking the pavement on Moraga Road, as cars turning north from Saint Mary's Road were avoiding it. I hope the chicken crossed the road to the trail on the other side. Better yet, I hope it turned around and followed that trail right back to the Cattle Chute and home.
