Lafayette Teacher Arraigned, Expected to Enter Plea Thursday

Stanley Middle School teacher Michael Merrick was arraigned before Judge Gregory Caskey on Monday, his attorney informing the court they are taking steps to secure his release.

Michael Merrick, the 47-year-old Lafayette resident and middle school teacher facing 17 felony counts after an alleged sexual relationship with a minor pupil, was arraigned Monday before Judge Gregory Caskey.

Merrick stood as attorney Peter Orth spoke during the hearing. Orth indicated that the teacher would be offering a property bond during a bail hearing scheduled for Thursday. Merrick is being held in lieu of $3.05 million bail.

Merrick, dressed in a jail-issue yellow jumpsuit, was obviously emotional, his  lip quivering, but said nothing as Orth addressed the court.

Merrick has been held at the Martinez Detention Facility since his arrest Oct. 27 on multiple felony counts of sex with a minor. Investigators allege that he abused the girl during tutoring sessions in July and August, and said he sent her dozens of text messages — many of them sexual in nature — in the course of a day.

Several supporters observed Monday's proceedings, including at least one former teacher from Stanley Middle School.
