Accused Child Molester Worked at Lafayette Church

Anthony D'Tiole graduated from St. Mary's College in 2011 according to online profile.

A man charged with molesting multiple children was employed at childcare centers and churches throughout Contra Costa County over the past two years and as recently as last week.

Anthony D'Tiole, 23, is being held at county jail in Martinez on $5.6 million bail and has been charged with four felony counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14 years old, according to county records.

The 23-year-old was arrested at a KinderCare facility in Clayton on April 18, where he had been working for two days. KinderCare corporate spokeswoman Colleen Moran said D'Tiole was immediately fired and was never left alone with children during his brief time at the facility.

He also passed a background check before being hired and did not have a criminal record, she said. "It's paramount to us that we hire employees that are caring and thoughtful because parents entrust us with the most important people in their lives...and its important to us that we maintain that trust," she said.

According to his LinkedIn profile, D'Tiole has held childcare jobs at locations throughout Contra Costa County since graduating from Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga in 2011.

In the online profile, the suspect said he was hired as a Sunday school teacher for first and second grade children at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church in 2011. Morgan Murray, the church's pastor, said D'Tiole worked at the church up until a week ago and is no longer employed there. "To the best of our knowledge, none of the allegations are connected to Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church," he said, noting that he had been advised not to comment on the matter by the church's legal counsel.

Representatives from Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Lafayette, where D'Tiole was employed from 2010 to 2011, were not available for comment today.

Walnut Creek police Lt. Steve Gorski said a police investigation is ongoing with the collaboration of Orinda police and other neighboring agencies. He said police believe D'Tiole, who also worked as a babysitter, may have victimized other children in the area. "We're looking for additional victims, just because he has had so much access to young children," the lieutenant said. "We're casting a wide net to make sure any potential victims out there know what's going on and have the ability to talk to our detectives."

He encouraged parents whose children have had contact with D'Tiole to talk to their kids and report anything suspicious. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Walnut Creek police at (925) 943-5874.

He was my daughter's preschool teacher. It's been terrifying to know this creep was around little children.

Yes, stellar resumes certainly do not tell the entire story about one's character. Predators are very good at playing relational chess, and setting up their facades, in order to get access to their victims. They will work for years sometimes, spinning webs of lies and gaining enablers who believe their lies, in order to get what they're after. Sad, the fact that people like D'Toile lie and take advantage of their victims' trusting hearts, to enact their ulterior motives. And while it's not fair to honest and moral male child caregivers, it's also true that most child sexual abuse (and adult sexual abuse) is perpetrated by males. Maybe the honest and moral male childcare providers can give suggestions on how to tell the difference between themselves and charismatic predators, at the get go. Also, learning about the markers and manipulation methods of predators by reading books like Dr. Martha Stout's The Sociopath Next Door, Dr. George Simon's In Sheep's Clothing, and Drs. Paul Babiak and Robert Hare's Snakes in Suits, would help people discern more quickly. And, if people were to seek out and interview a person's past intimate partners, the reality about their true characters is more likely to be revealed.

Good find, this article. Illustrates my points below - that they will spend years setting up their facades in order to gain access to victims and in order to enact their ulterior motives. I find this one of his quotes particularly disturbing: "D'Tiole attends St. Mary's College, has experience as a camp counselor, and plans on counseling children of divorce one day." Why? Because divorce causes many (but not all) children to be more vulnerable. Which begs the issue that children of divorce need extra support and counseling to be able to recognize the markers and manipulation methods of predators, I mentioned below.

I agree - good to know. Wide distribution of this sort of information is extremely important, so more can be in the know. Patch is wise to help our community learn. And, your comment helps too. Knowledge is power. The real truth sets people free. (Even if that truth is sometimes ugly.) Problem is, people with character disturbances also lie a lot. How to tell the lies form the truth?

Why is the bail over $5 million? I ask because I'm seeing other cases with bails that are not prohibitive to pay, and therefore the people are are out on bail. In this case, does a high bail mean the evidence is more solid? We are all shocked and some absolutely can't believe it. Anthony cared for our kids at a Berkeley Preschool.

What ever happenned to innocent until proven guilty?
Bailey Lee May 05, 2013 at 05:08 PM
The same thing that happened to appropriate punishment for the crime.

I have trusted Anthony with my children and still trust him with my children. An accusation is not truth and innocent people do get accused.

Julie Correa also completely denied Kristin Cunnane's speaking up about her abuse. Jerry Sandusky continued to deny he'd done anything wrong. That's what predators do. They lie a lot. That said, yes, innocent people do get falsely accused sometimes. If this is a false accusation then an article exonerating him, should, and I'm sure will, be published and widely distributed. The false accusers' names should also be published, and they should be sued for defamation.

Wow, well he worked with our daughter at a well-known summer camp, for 2-years. He was actually her supervisor...My partner and I only met him once and really didn't see this coming. He was friends with her for awhile too, until a riff at the workplace last year. It's sad that better measures are not in place. I hope that if he is innocent, he is set free but if guilty, hope that justice is served and more importantly, that the sweet and innocent children will find healing.

On a $5.6 million bail, there is concrete evidence. They shoul be posting updates on this case since it is so serious and keep people informed about it. Everyone that has children that this guy "watched" shoul really ask their children if anything happened. I would never trust him around another child again. Taken innocence from children is wrong on so many levels.
