A $1.8 Million Settlement In Moraga School District Molestation Case

It is the second settlement in the ongoing case of Daniel Witters; two more victims have pending cases.

One of the victims of molestation by a now-deceased science teacher has reached a settlement with the Moraga School District for $1.8 million, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The woman, known as Jane Doe Number 3, was the second victim of Daniel Witters to receive a settlement from the district. She was molested by the junior high science teacher when she was 13 years old. Witters committed suicide in 1996, shortly after a number of other girls came forward and accused him of molesting them.

The district has already paid $2.85 million to swimming coach Kristen Cunnane, another of Witter’s victims. Two other victims have suits pending against the district.

The suits claim that the district did not do enough at the time—the mid-1990s--to stop Witters, even though they had information that he was not acting appropriately with students.

In a separate story, the Times reported that a detective investigating rumors of Witters’ activities was “thwarted” in her efforts to uncover the truth.

The detective’s report reveals that at least three district officials knew about Witter’s behavior and did nothing to stop it, allowing him to molest more girls.
