Opinion: Camp for Aspergers Syndrome
Letter to the editor: Summer sleepaway camp offers social and life skills in Sierra Nevada setting.
By Michael Fields
My wife Margaret Fields and I have a son Darin with Aspergers Syndrome. Partly because of this and my wife's background as a psychologist, we started Aspergers Team Camp in 2010.
We started out as a one-week camp. Because of feedback from excited campers and parents, we are now a two-week sleepaway camp. We originate from Orinda but run our camp in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. We emphasize social skills and life skills while at the same time enjoy a variety of outdoor activities — we backpack, river-raft and sail on Tahoe.
The camp is coed at the Cal Lodge on Donner Summit. We are dedicated to learning social skills in a fun environment. Our son Darin is one of the camp councilors. He has a part-time job as well as being a student at Sonoma State University. I am a registered emergency nurse. We have a wonderful trained staff.
