The School District recently approved the use of chemical weed control on the playing fields at our school campuses, and routinely rely on RoundUp for killing weeds. Students and teachers can be exposed to these pesticides while walking along school pathways, sitting and eating lunch on the playing fields, participating in P.E. classes, during after-school sports, and in classrooms. Pesticides are known for causing a high risk of cancer and other health disorders. That is why studies show that California teachers have a higher risk of breast and other cancers. We want AUHSD to reduce the use of pesticides, and instead, use least toxic alternatives.
