Lamorinda Death Notices

Some of the people with ties to Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda who have passed away recently

David Brown, a former resident of Lafayette, was born in the farming community of Walnut Grove. He studied agricultural economics U.C. Berkeley. After his service in the U.S. Navy, he started the real estate firm Reynolds & Brown with Jon Reynolds. He and his first wife raised their three daughters in Lafayette. In 1988, Brown established the Hidden Leaf Foundation. Brown died on Oct. 28 at the age of 77.

Eugene Harter, a former resident of Lafayette, was born in Berkeley. He graduated from College of the Pacific in Stockton in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning two citations for heroism. He and his first wife raised their two daughters in Lafayette. Harter owned several businesses, including Berkeley Plywood and California Cargo Container. He loved sailing and was chairman of the St. Francis Yacht Club. Harter died on Sept. 18 at the age of 92.

Thomas Henderson, a resident of Lafayette, was born in San Francisco. He graduated from Cogswell Polytechnical College and worked at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories. He attended Lafayette United Methodist Church for 38 years. Henderson died on Oct. 16 at the age of 72.

Ruth Voll, a resident of Lafayette, was born in Wisconsin. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lafayette. Voll died on Nov. 10 at the age of 99.

Elsa M. Brown, a resident of Moraga, was born in Norway and immigrated to the United States in 1948. She was active in the Norwegian community and was a member of the Sons of Norway, Bjornson Lodge, in Oakland. Brown died on Nov. 8 at the age of 92.

Charles Harold Hartmann, a resident of Moraga, was born in Hollister. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1956 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked for 26 years for Varian Associates. In 1987, he formed his own company, Chromalab. He was an elder at Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church. Hartmann died on Oct. 19 at the age of 79.

John Holmgren, a resident of Orinda, was born in Illinois and earned a journalism degree from Northwestern University. He served in World War II. Holmgren worked as a writer for the California State Automobile Association and was editor of Motorland Magazine. He also did travel reports for KCBS radio in San Francisco. Holmgren died on Oct. 31 at the age of 90.

Thomas Marcin, a resident of Orinda, was the co-founder and president of HMS, a computer consulting service. Marcin died on Nov. 9 at the age of 71.
