Lamorinda Death Notices

Some of the people with ties to Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda who have passed away recently

Judith Ellen Dwyer-Mahl, a resident of Lafayette since 1985, was born in Connecticut and worked as a United Airlines flight attendant for 40 years. Dwyer-Mahl died Sept. 16 at the age of 65.

Elizabeth Edwards, a resident of Pleasant Hill, lived in many locales, including Orinda and Moraga. She taught aerobics classes in Lafayette at one time. Edwards died Sept. 14 at the age of 94.

Susan Hengl, a resident of Moraga, was born in Oakland and raised in Alameda. She received a teaching credential from San Francisco State. She ran a flower shop in Oakland and worked for Clorox Corporation. She and her husband, Larry, raised their children in Orinda before moving to Moraga. Hengl died on Sept. 13 at the age of 64.

Donald James Bergin,
a resident of Moraga, was born in San Francisco and lived the past 45 years in Contra Costa County. He was a Korean War veteran as well as an avid gardener and golfer. Bergin died recently at the age of 84.

Dorothy Thomas, a resident of Berkeley, was a member of the Orinda Country Club for most of her adult life. She was a U.C. Berkeley graduate who loved golf, bridge, reading and travel. Thomas died on Sept. 16 at the age of 98.

Kurt Bottjer, a resident of Florida, was born in Orinda and attended Miramonte High School, where he was a successful wrestler. He attended Notre Dame University on a wrestling and academic scholarship. He earned a doctorate in microbiology there. He recently retired from Ashland Corporation. Bottjer died on Sept. 15 at the age of 61.
