Tour de France for Newbies

Tour de France for newbies

The second of the three "Grand Tours",( there are three including the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and the Vuelta Espana) is well underway and there has been plenty of drama, excitement, carnage, and reason to celebrate.

Is the first time you've watched the Tour?  Are you wondering why Andre Greipel, Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan are not going to win the Tour?

Here's the Tour basics: This is a timed event. The cyclist who completes each stage in the least amount of time over the entire length of the tour wins.

Think cumulative. The sprinters will win the flat stages but the climbers will win the hilly stages while the sprinters lose a bunch of time.

The Yellow jersey is worn by the man who finishes each stage quicker than the cumulative time of anyone else.

The Green jersey is worn by the man who has the most sprint points. (more on this later)

The Polkadot jersey is worn by the best mountain finish leader.

The White jersey is worn the the best young rider ( under 25)

There is also a "most aggressive" award but no jersey. Dave Zabriskie won this award today for staying out front the most amount of time before he was caught by the peloton.
