Home buyers with children can simply add up the costs of their mortgage, property tax and schools. Even in Lamorinda, if you add in the voluntary contributions to EFO, MEF, or LAF and parents club, it is still substantially less to live here.
Two similar homes just off Grand Ave, near Ace Hardware, just sold for a difference of $260,000. They were the same square footage, same condition, and only 3 blocks apart.

The only difference: one was in Oakland and the other was in Piedmont. The area is really desirable, both homes are in the same neighborhood near the Rose Garden and the ONLY difference is the school district.
When the cost of owning a home, plus private school is calculated as part of monthly living expenses, living in Lamorinda with our great public schools comes out as very affordable.
I see couples with young children every Sunday when I host an open house and they have usually done the same math. With all of the other wonderful attributes to living in Lamorinda, it becomes a easy choice from a financial perspective.
