In this one-day workshop, we shrink the theatre down in size so that students get a chance to try many aspects of character creation and storytelling. We begin by making puppet characters and bringing them to life through "interviews" and improvisation games. Next, we issue a story challenge in which we introduce the basic structure of a story (characters, plot, setting, problem, antagonist, narrator) and allow students to work in groups using their puppet "cast" to develop a (very) short scene – complete with one backdrop and any needed props. Finally, we let the teams perform their scenes, and have them randomly draw a mystery ending. Each participant receives a certificate of recognition, and gets to take home his or her puppet.
This workshop combines structured creative thinking with emergent learning, creating an environment in which students have permission to experiment within a structure that helps them to be successful and tackle new concepts. It also encourages empathy and respect by allowing students to both perform and to be a member of an audience.
