Gold Coast concert: Bittersweet Romantics

If Brahms had been more successful in love, it’s unlikely
he’d been able to write anything as beautiful as the opening theme in his c minor piano quartet.  The Gold Coast
Chamber Players explore the famous love triangle of Robert Schumann, Brahms’ friend and mentor, Clara Schumann, Robert’s wife and a gifted pianist and composer, and Brahms who longed for a woman he could never have.  The program highlights these three musical giants and their intimate relationships. Musicologist Kai Christiansen will start the evening with a provocative pre-concert talk at 7 p.m.

Pianist Daniel Shapiro form the Cleveland Institute of Music is a leading interpreter of Schumann and Brahms will provide meaningful musical insight into these complex composers. Violinist, Mitchell Newman, from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, violist Pamela Freund-Striplen and cellist Eric Gaenslen join Mr. Shapiro for a robust collaboration of piano quartets by Brahms and Schumann.  In keeping with the concert’s theme, the program begins with “Romance” by Clara Schumann.

The Gold Coast Chamber Players are known for their engaging and vibrant performances and audiences have been responding with such enthusiasm that tickets are at a premium.
