Gold Coast Concert: Concertante

Stars convene from around the world for Gold Coast Chamber Players concert- March 1 in Orinda, March 2 in Lafayette!

World-renowned musicians from the Amati Ensemble, based in the Netherlands, join Bay Area superstar musicians on March 1st and 2nd in an unusual program of music by Mozart and Haydn.  Violinist Gil Sharon, leader of the Amati Ensemble, is one of the leading chamber musicians and soloists in Europe and first performed with Gold Coast Chamber Players in 2011. Joining him is Amati violist Ron Ephrat, former principal violist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic.  Their return marks the continued effort by GCCP to bring the world’s finest classical musicians to the Lamorinda area.

This concert is filled with superstar local musicians as well. Cellists Jennifer Culp (formerly of the Kronos Quartet) and Robert Howard (a GCCP regular) join violinist Mariya Borozina (SF Opera and SF Ballet) and violist and GCCP Artistic Director, Pamela Freund-Striplen for superstar collaboration, for two evenings of music making at the highest level.

The program offers two great works usually performed with orchestra in unusual and effective sextet arrangements.  Mozart’s famed Sinfonia Concertante is transformed in this delightful chamber arrangement made during Mozart’s lifetime. It will be hard to imagine only six musicians can sound alternately like a full orchestra and also a chamber group. The Haydn Sinfonia Concertante was arranged specially for the Amati Ensemble and their recording of the piece will be available at the concert.  Beginning this program will be Mozart’s youthful quintet for two violins, two violas and cello, K. 174.  Focusing on the classical style, this program showcases the tremendous inventiveness and variety of the two superstar composers, Mozart and Haydn.

Lucky audiences will have two chances to hear this program: Friday, March 1, 2013 at 7:30 PM at the Orinda Library Auditorium, and Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 7:30PM at the Lafayette Library Community Hall (pre-concert talk at 7PM). Tickets can be purchased online at www.gcplayers.org or over the phone at (925) 283-3728. Tickets are $35 general, $30 senior and $10 students.  These concerts sell out quickly so reserve early to avoid disappointment.
