Jazz Band Combines With Flock of Flutes for Winter Concert

Civic Arts Education combines its very own Flock of Flutes (one of the East Bay’s most well-known flute choirs) with its jazz band for a fun and unique concert. “We’ll be playing big band music with the Flock of Flutes (FOF) adding a really nice touch,” says director Max Pricco.

Musicians in the jazz band range in age from teenagers to players in their 70s. Some of the cool jazz in store for audiences at the December 9 concert includes: Bernie Miller’s “Bernie’s Tune;” Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone;” Charlie Parker’s “My Little Suede Shoes;” Cole Porter’s “Night and Day;” Paul Desmond’s “Take Five;” and Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love for You.” According to Max, there will also be some seasonal tunes mixed in such as “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne.

FOF will add a distinctive touch to the afternoon concert. Under the direction of Monica Williams, the flock is considered one of the Bay Area’s premiere flute choirs and the only East Bay choir composed entirely of flutists. FOF performs with the entire flute family including piccolo, concert flute, alto flute, bass flute and contra bass flute. Musicians with the group range in age from 12 years and up. The group plays a wide variety of music including many original works composed just for FOF.

At the December 9 concert, the flock will play music from around the world including: Red Burl’s “Remembrance;” W.A. Mozart’s “Rondo” from the Turkish March; George Bizet’s “Gypsy Song” from Carmen; two chorale preludes by J.S. Bach – “Jesu, Meine Freude” and “Wie schon leuchtet der Mogenstern.” Catherine McMichael’s Hillside Sketches will add some spice with such titles as “Largo de los Lupinos,”  “El Vuelo de las Murcielagos,” and “Fiesta de las Flautas.”
