April 2, Pleasant
Hill, CA¾By the summer of 2010,
46 states of the Union agreed to adopt the Common Core Standards
Initiative. Fewer than four years
later, the Initiative is generating a great deal of controversy; at least 30
states now have legislation pending to repeal compliance. California school districts are
currently tasked by the California Department of Education to fully implement
the Standards within the next school year, a move that promises extensive
educational changes to the state’s six million public school elementary through
high school students.

Most parents and educators remain unclear what those changes
will mean for curricula, data collection and testing. One group of parents aims to provide a public forum for San
Francisco East Bay residents, which will present balanced views both for and
against the Common Core and open the floor for questions.
Principle organizer and Mount Diablo Unified School District
parent Denise Pursche explains, “The community at large deserves to know just
how fundamentally the Common Core educational standards shift instruction for
students. When people think of
standards, they probably think of basic knowledge that students should acquire
by grade level. But these
standards specify what is to be taught, what methodologies must be used, and
what material should not be covered at all. In short, it is closer to actual curricula than most standards.” Fellow organizer Lisa Ackerman concurs,
“Both proponents and detractors agree that the standards are very narrow; the
question is whether it’s actually good for students. We want all interested parties to come to the forum and make
that determination for themselves.”
