Chip and His Dog

Solo Opera, the East Bay’s chamber opera company, in
collaboration with the award winning Cantabella Children’s Chorus of Livermore, present an exciting double bill of opera and choral music for children and families.

The program will feature Gian Carlo Menotti’s 30-minute opera, Chip and his Dog. Menotti, the composer, states that Chip is “an opera for children to be sung by children.”  The show is a delightful story of a poor instrument maker and his talented dog that capture the heart of a princess and her entire kingdom!
The opera will be well paired with Benjamin Britten’s Friday Afternoons Op. 7, a set of 13 songs for children’s chorus.  Friday Afternoons and Chip and His Dog were the same pairing on the original recording in 1979 and go very well together musically, being of the same time period.   It is also of special importance that through August of 2014, the music world will be celebrating the 100th Birthday Anniversary of Benjamin Britten.
Chip and His Dog will be directed/produced by Solo Opera Artistic Director, Sylvia Amorino, who is no stranger to Menotti operas, having directed/produced several of his other works. Bee Chow, Cantabella’s Artistic Director and Founder, will conduct the Menotti and Britten pieces and a children’s chorus of 20.
