Who's Tearing Down Trees in Lafayette?

Trees lining First Street in Lafayette look like they've had their branches ripped down by someone (or something?). Do you know what happened?

Gorilla? Big birds? Errant driver? A series of nine trees lining First Street along the back of Lafayette Elementary were looking a little the worse for wear Monday morning -- and no one knew how it happened.

UPDATE: Part of the mystery has been solved by Lafayette Police Chief Eric Christenen, who says that someone seems to have broken the branches off. A vandalism report has been filed, but there are no suspects and no leads.

Have you heard anything? Did you see someone? Let us know in the comments below.

This is so disheartening. Yes I live nearby so I have a definite personal interest but these trees are very much a part of Lafayette. The City does a great job of maintaining the landscaping. I hate to think that we have residents who will vandalize these trees. Please Lafayette let's watch our community and kids an take care of our town.

Over a year ago I came upon a young Stanley student with a couple of friends who was hanging on the branches and breaking them off. I called him on it and he claimed it was an accident. I responded that the first was an accident but not the second one. I should have gotten his name but, alas I didn't. Some time later several plum trees on School street on the way to Stanley were so severely broken by someone that they had to be cut down. Several months later the original trees on First street were broken again so this latest incident is probably the fourth time trees in that area have been vandalized. I can't be certain but I would suspect the same person is doing all of the damage. It's a waste of taxpayer money to have to replace these beautiful trees and very importantly, there's a trouble young man out there who needs guidance as this is definitely someone who is angry and looking for attention in all the wrong ways.

Interesting...we woke up here in Moraga on Monday to one of small new trees in our front yard being smashed. I thought maybe a deer had been startled and ran through it. Maybe not after all.

Interesting, Natalie. My first thought was "middle schooler."
