The Vaqueros Return to Moraga

Don Joaquin would have liked seeing the parade and turnout for a traditional wedding at St. Mary's Chapel Saturday. For a while, it sounded a lot like Old California in Moraga.

A traditional wedding procession along the streets of Moraga Saturday included a horse-drawn wedding carriage, strolling mariachis and a contingent of vaqueros - the sight stopping many Moraga residents dead in their tracks.

Don Joaquin Moraga, who gave his name to the town and who looked out over an impressive empire from his hilltop adobe in present day Orinda, probably would have said "partyyy" as the procession threaded along neighborhood streets to the chapel at St. Mary's College, where the nuptials were done.

With the singing and strumming, the clip-clop of horse's hooves, we were returned - briefly - to Old California. Close your eyes and you could have heard Don Joaquin salute the happy couple.
