Experts Suggest Pet Owners Protect Their Animals From Bombs Bursting In Air

The Contra Costa Animal Services Department has published a "tips sheet" for providing a "safe haven" for pets amid the sudden explosions and bright flashes of light of July 4 festivities.

The July 4th festivities may be exciting for humans but they can be frightening to pets, so Contra Costa County officials have compiled a tips sheet for protecting your pets' well-being during the holiday celebrations.

Don't take pets to fireworks displays or leave them outside unattended, advises the county's Animal Services Department.

"Do keep your pet indoors in a safe place," according to the guide, which is titled, "Be Patriotic AND 'Pet-riotic' on the Fourth!"

"If you leave the house, turn on a radio or TV at normal volume," the guide says. "Remove any items that a frightened pet in a destructive state could get injured by."

"This can be a difficult time for your animals and a very busy time for Animal Services," the advisory says. "The loud noises accompanying fireworks and firecrackers can frighten many pets. They may bolt, run away and become lost."
