Boring Drillers Touch Augers On Orinda-Oakland Tunnel Project

Crews excavating a fourth bore to the Caldecott Tunnel broke through from opposite ends and met in the middle for the first time Tuesday.

An underground milestone in the $390 million Caldecott Tunnel Fourth Bore Project was reached as teams of drillers boring into the hillside from both ends of the project met in the middle for the first time Tuesday.

Project spokeswoman Ivy Morrison said the link-up was accomplished at approximately 2:45 p.m. and marks a major step forward for the project, built to relieve congestion on Highway 24 between Orinda and Oakland, and expected to be completed in late 2013.

The project is a partnership between the Federal Highway Administration, Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, and the Alameda County Transportation Commission.
