Rotary HOME Team Tackles Household Repairs for Lamorinda Seniors

Looking for an "aww" story? One of those yarns where nice people are doing good deeds for others - for nothing more than the enjoyment they get in doing something nice for a stranger? Here's one.

Some seniors have a difficult time with many common household repairs due to their physical condition or safety issues. In some cases the cost of hiring a handyman or contractor to perform minor repairs is prohibitive, and there may not be any family able or willing to assist.

That's where the Rotary HOME (HOme Maintenance for the Elderly) Team comes in.

Good men from the Rotary Club of Lamorinda Sunrise volunteer their services to older folks who have trouble taking care of household chores - everything from replacing lightbulbs in hard to reach areas to fixing leaking faucets, toilet malfunctions, squeaky doors and windows and a multitude of other chores an older person may have trouble with.

The HOME Team gets referrals from groups and agencies that already are involved with the elderly. Folks can also contact the HOME Team by calling 925-956-7363, faxing 925-944-7011 or e-mailing the Rotary Club of Lamorinda Sunrise.

Rotarians go out every other month in teams of two or three, complete with a set of tools and supplies that make short work of many of those jobs that seem like no big deal until you have no way to get them done.

There is no charge to the people the Rotary HOME Team helps. There is one unanswered question, though: who is happier, the people the HOME Team helps or the Rotarians who do the work? The Rotarians, at least, said they'd call that one a draw.
