Moraga's Cowboys and Power Drinkers Turn Slightly In Graves; Wine Bar(n) Coming To Town

Patch videographer Nick Culum joins Canyon Construction president Chris Avant for a tour of the bright and shiny - and LEED certified - Moraga Bar(n).

The phone rings and it's the pain-in-the-you-know-where assignment editor and he's talking about this new wine bar opening soon in Moraga.

Now, my Saint Mary's buds are always whining about not having a place to go in town, "nowhere to get a decent drink," "nowhere to hang...yadda yadda," so I'm thinking this may actually be pretty cool and I grab the camera and head out.

Editor Boy is crying about how the place is a local landmark, how some of his best nights were spent asleep on the plank they stretched across two beer kegs and called a bar or something, and when I show up - the place is a palace.

I mean, I'm picturing this dark sawdust joint with holes in the floor and Chris Avant and his company have got it fitted with the latest green gadgetry and a glass floor you can walk on that lets light in everywhere. It's beautiful.

Chris wants to open up the building this summer and use it as a wine bar, so it looks like my boys may get their wish after all. The building received a platinum award for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and produces 80 percent of its power and 100 percent of its irrigation water through underground rainwater catchment tanks.
