Gadget Review: The Guardener -- Keeping Nibbling Deer At Bay

The problem: keeping your newly planted flora safe from the marauding herds of deer roaming the neighborhood at night. The solution: a well-aimed blast of water

Regular readers will know that we at and that we go particularly goo-goo over a particularly good gadget.

Ones that help us, do what their makes say they will do, work simply and efficiently and leave a sparse footprint.

Here's one we found that we liked and which has successfully kept the Antlered Gangs prowling our neighborhood at night at bay. The Guardener.

Patch Disclosure: Full price ($175) was paid for this item and no consideration has been given to the manufacturer. Available through Amazon.

This little guy is a solar-powered water cistern equipped with an infra-red motion detector and rain-bird spray device on its face. When the antlered ones approach, the Guardener emits a high-pitched buzz the drives off the scaredy cats -- and then backs it up with a spray of water to fend off the hardcore flower eaters.

Any overspray goes onto the garden. And no one in the herd gets hurt. They just move off in search of easier pickins'.

Beats any of the other anti-deer tricks we have heard about and tried over the years.

Thanks for this tip. The deer were particularly tough on my garden this year. Normally, I don't care that much. I have lots of natives they aren't interested in and a few roses. But man, did they destroy my roses. I used the spray deer repellant, but it worked so-so.

On the advice of a friend with a serious deer problem I have been successfully using the Contech CRO101 Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler all summer long to deter the deer from eating my roses. A cheaper solution at $46 from Amazon.

Morning, Jude... is that one hose-fed? By that I mean it needs to be attached to a charged hose in order to work?

Beat one raw egg into a quart of water. Strain into a hand spray bottle. Spray onto plants. Lasts a month if it doesn't rain. Deer will not touch anything sprayed with egg. Cost: a few cents and 10 minutes of your time. Thanks to McDonnell's Nursery for this tip, many years ago. It has always worked.

On several occasions, I have seen 5-6 chickens pecking their way down their steep driveway on theRead More east side of Saint Mary's Road, very close to the Cattle Chute. I had not read this story earlier. On 6/3 or 6/4, I saw a black hen, alone, out in the road right at the point of the Moraga Commons. It was pecking the pavement on Moraga Road, as cars turning north from Saint Mary's Road were avoiding it. I hope the chicken crossed the road to the trail on the other side. Better yet, I hope it turned around and followed that trail right back to the Cattle Chute and home.
