Commuters are abandoning Lamorinda's BART stations in favor of finding alternative transport into San Francisco this morning after a fire in West Oakland damaged the BART line there.
There is no transbay BART service from Oakland to San Francisco, though lines are running normally in the East Bay and Peninsula.
Bus bridges have been unable to accomodate thousands of commuters stacking up in Oakland after BART officials announced that service into San Francisco was truncated.
The shutdown pushed commuters onto the roadways -- and promptly caused a huge backup at the Bay Bridge toll plaza. Highway 24 from Lafayette to the Caldecott is extremely slow. Ferry service is running at peak capacity and commuters are throwing in to "rent" taxis to take them to work -- only to find themselves caught in traffic.
