West Oakland Fire Damages BART Tracks; No Transbay Service Until Afternoon

Thousands of commuters are scrambling to find alternative routes into The City after a West Oakland fire brewed up and damaged the BART lines.

Commuters are abandoning Lamorinda's BART stations in favor of finding alternative transport into San Francisco this morning after a fire in West Oakland damaged the BART line there.

There is no transbay BART service from Oakland to San Francisco, though lines are running normally in the East Bay and Peninsula.

Bus bridges have been unable to accomodate thousands of commuters stacking up in Oakland after BART officials announced that service into San Francisco was truncated.

The shutdown pushed commuters onto the roadways -- and promptly caused a huge backup at the Bay Bridge toll plaza. Highway 24 from Lafayette to the Caldecott is extremely slow. Ferry service is running at peak capacity and commuters are throwing in to "rent" taxis to take them to work -- only to find themselves caught in traffic.

What's your situation? If you're standing in line, waiting for a bus or other means of transportation, give us a situation report on conditions where you are so that others may benefit.

On several occasions, I have seen 5-6 chickens pecking their way down their steep driveway on theRead More east side of Saint Mary's Road, very close to the Cattle Chute. I had not read this story earlier. On 6/3 or 6/4, I saw a black hen, alone, out in the road right at the point of the Moraga Commons. It was pecking the pavement on Moraga Road, as cars turning north from Saint Mary's Road were avoiding it. I hope the chicken crossed the road to the trail on the other side. Better yet, I hope it turned around and followed that trail right back to the Cattle Chute and home.
