Historians, Friends Of Besieged Adobe Meet Tonight

Friends of the beleaguered Joaquin Moraga Adobe -- which as it happens is in Orinda -- will report on the devastating impact local vandals are having on the Gold Rush-era structure tonight.

Oddly enough, the structure made of mud and straw and timber from local redwood groves fared better in days when bandits and marauders roamed the valley than it does in more "civilized" times.

Don Joaquin Moraga's hilltop ranch house has suffered much over the years and particularly now, as attempts to ward off nocturnal visits by bands of paint can-wielding youths appear to have largely failed. Historic bronze markers were stolen long ago, and partiers have chipped away at a flimsy protective covering and into the mud walls themselves.

Kent Long, president of the Friends of the Joaquin Moraga Adobe will make a presentation on the state of Lamorinda's oldest standing structure tonight (Wednesday) at the Orinda Historical Society meeting at Orinda Community Church.

Kent is coming armed with the stories of the adobe's history, and pictures depicting its current state of decline. The meeting is open to all and starts at 7 p.m. with a social gathering a half hour beforehand.
